Made in India Jeep Wrangler launched: Everything you need to know

Jeep had opened its order books for the locally assembled Wrangler last month and was supposed to launch the SUV a few days ago but had to delay those plans. The Wrangler has been launched here in two variants but doesn`t sport any significant changes as compared to the CBU models. Visually, the locally assembled Wrangler isn`t any different from the CBU model and is powered by the same 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Jeep has launched the locally assembled Wrangler in India at Rs 53.9 lakh for Unlimited variant while 2021 Wrangler Rubicon gets a price tag of Rs 57.9 lakh. This means that the made in India Wrangler range is substantially cheaper than the previous models that used to reach our shores via CBU (completely built-up) unit. For reference, BS4 Wrangler Unmilited has launched in India at Rs 63.94 lakh while the CBU Rubicon was launched here atRs 68.4 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, India. This also makes Wrangler the second Jeep car after Compass to be locally manufactured. The carmaker noted that it will also introduce a limited number ‘Launch Edition’ in the country to celebrate Wrangler’s 80th Anniversary.

Partha Datta, Jeep India Managing Director, said, "Indian customers have always desired the legendary Jeep Wrangler, and I am pleased that today we are able to bring this to them, assembled in India. We have extended our points of sale and service for the locally-assembled Wrangler to 26 across the country. I’m also happy to announce that we have introduced a MOPAR-original suite of over 120 Wrangler accessories and value packs which customers can order at our dealerships."

The locally assembled Jeep Wrangler is propelled by a 2.0-litre petrol engine that puts out 264 bhp and a peak torque of 400 Nm. This powerplant is paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Both Wrangler Unlimited and Rubicon get the company`s Selec-Trac full-time 4x4 system with an active transfer case, different terrain modes to choose from, and shift-on-the-fly system. It analyses the terrain and automatically sends torque to the wheels with the most grip. This way, the system provides optimum traction on different terrains like snow, mud, rocks, etc. Wrangler Rubicon, however, also gets Rock-Trac 4X4 system with an electronically operated clutch, electronic front sway bar, and Dana 44 axles with TruLok electronic locking for front and rear differentials.

The made in India Jeep Wrangler comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Jeep`s UConnect connectivity suite. The instrument cluster now houses a seven-inch TFT screen which is flanked by analogue counters for speed and tachometer. Other than this, the SUV gets provisions like LED fog lamps, LED tail lights, LED DRLs, engine stop/start, cruise control, dual-zone air conditioning, front and side airbags, park assist system, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ABS, hill-start assist, hill descent control, electronic roll mitigation, tyre pressure monitoring system, rear camera, etc.
