Celcom taps Ericsson to make LTE network 5G-ready

Celcom Axiata has signed an agreement with Ericsson to expand and upgrade its LTE network and provide a platform for the operator’s eventual evolution to 5G. Under the deal, the vendor will supply RAN equipment from its Ericsson Radio System portfolio to help Celcom meet growing demand for data services in Malaysia. In February 2018, the company also announced that all its radio products delivered since 2015 will support NB-IoT and 5G NR capabilities with a remote software installation. Both companies conducted a 5G trial using the 28 GHz band last year. Celcom Axiata CEO Mohamad Idham Nawawi said the partnership was strategic “as it will not only help us further expand our LTE footprint but create the base for the launch of 5G services”Ericsson has recently added new hardware and software products to its radio portfolio that enhance the agility and speed with which cellcos can roll out their 5G networks.
