LUCKNOW: After a gradual drop for five days in a row, Covid-19 daily tally and toll spiked on Wednesday. The virus killed 38 persons and infected 3,004 patients in the past 24 hours.

Among those who succumbed to the disease included a Shia Post Graduate College teacher. Though daily recoveries — 4,878 in 24 hours — outnumbered new infections for the 14th consecutive day, it was overshadowed by the fact that the city still has 3,1780 active cases, of whom nearly 6,500 are in hospitals. The cause of worry is that about 3,000 of those hospitalised are serious or critical. Compounding the problem was that the increasing number of doctors and paramedics are also getting infected, shrinking human resource power in the already overwhelmed healthcare facilities.

The second wave that started on March 15 in 50 days has infected 1.4 lakh people and killed 760 patients, accounting for 63% and 40% of cases and deaths, respectively, in 14 months of the pandemic. The number of recoveries during the second wave has been one lakh and overall in the pandemic 1.8 lakh.
