  • Kashmiri Pandits leave the valley

    On January 2, the Hindus of the Kashmir Valley, a large majority of whom were Kashmiri Pandits, were forced to flee the Kashmir valley as a result of terrorism. Of the approximately 160,000–170,000 Pandits living in the Kashmir Valley in 1990, only 4,000–5,000 were left in the valley. Most families were resettled in Jammu, National Capital Region surrounding Delhi and other neighbouring states.

  • Mandal Commission protest- Rajiv Goswami self immolation

    On September 19, the criticism against Mandal commission was sharp and colleges across the country held massive protests against job reservations for Backward Castes in India. Rajiv Goswami, a student of Deshbandhu College self-immolated himself during the 1990 Mandal agitation.

  • Chandra Shekhar Singh becames 8th Prime Minister of India

    On November 10, Chandra Shekhar Singh became the 8th Prime Minister of India replacing  V.P. Singh . VP Singh tried to implement Mandal commission’s  recommendations and had to resigned on November 7, 1990, after receiving a vote of no confidence in the Lok Sabha.

  • Ram Rath Yatra led by Advani

    From 25 September 1990 – 30 October 1990-The Ram Rath Yatra was organized to support the agitation of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and its Sangh Parivar affiliates to erect a temple to the Hindu deity Rama on the site of the Babri Masjid. It was led by the then-BJP-president L. K. Advani.

  • IPKF withdraws from Sri Lanka

    On March 24, the IPKF completed the withdrawal from Sri Lanka in 1990 after Prime Minister V. P. Singh’s order. The Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF),was set up to cease assisting Tamil insurgents, Militant groups including the LTTE.During the 32-month presence of the IPKF in Sri Lanka, the cost for the Indian government was estimated at over 10.3 billion.

  • Nivedita Bhasin becomes youngest woman pilot

    Nivedita Bhasin of Indian Airlines became the youngest woman pilot in world civil aviation history to command a commercial jet aircraft on 1 January 1990 at the age of 26. Capt Nivedita Bhasin piloted IC-492 on the Bombay-Aurangabad-Udaipur sector.

  • Operation Raahat to evacuate Indian citizens from Yemen

    From April 3-April 9, Operation Raahat was carried out by Indian Armed Forces to evacuate Indian citizens and other foreign nationals from Yemen.  The air evacuation was started by the Indian Air Force and Air India on 3 April 2015 from Sana'a. More than 4640 Indian citizens in Yemen were evacuated along with 960 foreign nationals of 41 countries.
