Mayawati becomes 1st Female Dalit CM, VSNL starts India's first Internet service

On June 3, Mayawati became Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in a short-lived coalition government. She was the first female Dalit Chief Minister in India and served as CM till 18 October 1995. During this term, the new districts of Ambedkar Nagar district and Udham Singh Nagar district were created.

On August 31, Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh  was killed in a car bombing in retaliation for the human rights violations during the anti-insurgency operations in Punjab. Beant Singh was an Indian politician and the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1992 to 1995.The blast claimed the lives of 17 others including 3 Indian commandos. Dilawar Singh Babbar of Babbar Khalsa Internationalacted as the suicide bomber.

On September 21, A Hindu worshipper at a temple in south New Delhi made an offering of milk to a statue of Ganesha. When a spoonful of milk from the bowl was held up to the trunk of the statue, the liquid was seen to disappear, apparently taken in by the idol. Word of the event spread quickly, and by mid-morning it was found that statues of the entire Hindu pantheon in temples all over India were taking in milk.

On August 14,  Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited launched India's first full Internet service for public access. The Gateway Internet Access Service (GIAS) was launched before India's August 15th Independence Day, a favourite for public-sector inaugurations.

The social service branch of the Mumbai police had registered a case in August 1995 after Sapre and Soman posed in the nude, wearing only shoes and a python wrapped around them. Another case was filed under the Wildlife Protection Act against the advertising agency for illegal use of the python.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge became the highest grossing Bollywood film of the year, and one of the most successful Indian films of all time earning  US$32,766,000 in 1995 in India and  about US$4,946,000 in 1995 overseas,  It won 10 Filmfare Awards, the most for a single film at that time, and won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Its soundtrack album became one of the most popular of the 1990s.
