  •  Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi

    The assassination of Rajiv Gandhi occurred on 21st May as a result of a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur, near Madras, in Tamil Nadu. It was carried out by Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, also known as Dhanu  and at least 14 others were also killed. The attack was blamed on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a militant organization from Sri Lanka.

  • PV Narasimha Rao sworn in as the 9th Prime Minister of India

    On June 21, PV Narasimha Rao became the 9th Prime Minister of India. In 1991, Rao almost retired from politics, but it was the assassination of Congress President Rajiv Gandhi which made him return. P.V Narsimha Rao was the first person outside of the Nehru-Gandhi family to serve as Prime Minister of India for five consecutive years

The government of India announced its New Industrial Policy and the economic reforms kick-started in 1991 brought about expansion of the services sector helped largely by a liberalised investment and trade regime.They also increased consumer choices and reduced poverty significantly.

  • India's first supercomputer launched

    India's first supercomputer PARAM 8000 (made by C-DAC) was launched on 1st July. It was indigenously built in 1991 by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing and was replicated and installed at ICAD Moscow in 1991 under Russian collaboration.

  • Pooja Bedi in Kamasutra Ad

     Kamasutra condoms released an ad starring Pooja Bedi and Marc Robinson, conceptualised by Alyque Padamsee of Lintas. For the first time in India, a condom commercial was talking about pleasure and sex in the same tone. 

  •  Kerala was declared a `Fully Literate State`

    On April 18-, Kerala was declared a, 'Fully Literate State' . As per the norms of National Literacy Mission, a literacy rate above 90 % shall be treated as complete literacy and kerela’s literacy rate was 90.9%.
